When To Purchase A New Mattress

Posted on

Many people don't give their mattress a lot of thought. However, your bed is one of the most important pieces of furniture in your house. Your mattress plays a large role in the quality of your sleep. They don't last forever. You'll need to replace yours periodically, but you may be unsure if it's the correct time for a new mattress. Here are four rules of thumb that will help you decide when to go mattress shopping:

1. Your mattress is over eight years old.

Mattresses can be made from springs or memory foam. No matter what material is inside your mattress, it can still wear out eventually. If your mattress is over eight years old, you should think about replacing it. Older mattresses can develop flat spots and indentations that can make you less comfortable at night. Memory foam may last longer than other varieties. However, you should still replace them after fifteen years, at the latest.

2. You have a second-hand mattress.

In an effort to cut costs, some people accept second-hand mattresses from friends or family. You may have purchased a pre-owned mattress at a discount or even moved into your current home and used the mattress that was already there. Second-hand mattresses can harbor bed bugs and other unwanted pests. Bed bugs are notoriously hard to remove, so it's best to avoid an infestation in the first place. If you currently have a used mattress, you should strongly consider replacing it with a brand-new model.

3. You have not been sleeping well.

The number one sign that you need a new mattress is poor sleep. People require at least eight hours of quality sleep to function well during the day. Poor sleep quality can harm your mood, productivity, and cognitive abilities. If you've tried everything to get a better night's sleep, to no avail, you should try replacing your mattress. A newer, more comfortable mattress can help you fall asleep and stay asleep until morning. Don't let an old mattress keep you awake.

4. You desire a different type of mattress.

You should also purchase a new mattress if you simply feel the need for a change. There are several reasons a person might want a different one. You may wish to try a mattress made from a newer material, or you may want a softer or firmer option. If a romantic partner moves in with you, you may want to upgrade your current mattress to a larger size.
